This week we celebrated Sarath’s 17th birthday. As hard as it is to believe that he is 17, I am very happy to see the young man he is growing into. He is compassionate, kind and smart. The transformation he has made from middle school to now has been amazing. He is emotionally mature now and I love the conversations we have. From the brain rot words at school to politics, we talk about everything under the sun. There are times I still see the little kid in him, but I am really enjoying the big kid I get to interact with everyday.
Sanjay was keen on making a birthday cake for Sarath. I probably would’ve just ordered a cake if not for Sanjay. He really seems to love baking, but I don’t give him too many opportunities. I really don’t want to keep baking cookies, muffins and cakes as we’ll end up eating them all. So, he was very excited to bake the cake and do the frosting. We baked a chocolate cake and added chocolate frosting on top. I tried to do the chocolate drip using chocolate ganache. This is the first time I made ganache and it actually came out well. We used home made whipped cream chocolate frosting and some store bought frosting.
The cake itself tasted very good. The frosting and the design was okay. I did part of the frosting and Sanjay did a small part. He did the writing. Most of the design was Sanjay’s idea. I implemented it. He wanted to put Ghiradeli chocolate squares on the cake, but we couldn’t find the ones that Sarath likes. So, we got the Lindt chocolates. The kids said it looked good, but I felt like I could have done a better job. Sanjay and I liked the home made frosting, but the store bought one was way too sweet. So, next time we decided to make the whipped cream frosting more stable so that we can pipe designs.
I made tamarind rice and gulab jamun on his birthday. He wanted to have friends over, but since it was a weekday, we had to skip it. We just did a video call to my parents and in-laws while he was cutting the cake. They were happy. We ordered pizza for dinner and that was good.
